YOU’LL HATE
This is Silent Hill?
Silent Hill. A once-resounding name, etched in the minds of gamers with cult games, with monsters so classic that… no need to play like the Pyramid Head executioner or the ‘hot’ nurses to … — Bubblehead Nurse.
Quite unfortunately, after all this time, and when Team Silent dissolved, Silent Hill also soundless… until Hideo Kojima ‘almost revived’ the series with a short free-to-play game P.T., and many players think that this will again be a new dawn for this forgotten series.
However, life is not like dreams or projects Silent Hills cancelled, Kojima left, and Silent Hill once again falling into the Otherworld… until Konami decided to ‘remake’ Silent Hill 2, and unexpectedly launched Silent Hill: The Short Message, a free-to-play title, was introduced as a ‘demo’ to what the series was about to receive.
Back to Silent Hill: The Short Message, the writer admits to having only played two versions Silent Hill, which is Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, however, those two games left a deep impression on the writer with a tense, thrilling storyline, a creepy atmosphere like someone is strangling, and wild horror hauntings that cannot be explained as clearly as the action horror game series of the time: Resident Evil.
With Silent Hill: The Short Message, what do we have? The player assumes the role of little Anita, at the invitation of a friend named Maya to visit an abandoned apartment in the city of Kettenstadt – a city where the German frontier is in a difficult period. Every sin, Maya… dead (very familiar motif), but Anita still receives messages from Maya asking her to go to a location they both know, and despite everything Anita still heads in to find Maya, uncovering the secret behind these strange things (like some game ending with the number 2, right?).
Basically, Silent Hill: The Short Message focusing on the inner characters of Anita, Maya, and Amelie. For Anita, she is a lack of self-esteem, depressed after being exposed to toxic comparisons and words on social media. For Maya, she is a talented and promising young painter, but it seems that for some reason (which will be explained in the plot) she is isolated and also falls into depression. Amelie, who is friends with both Maya and Anita, is also the catalyst for the plot twist.
Silent Hill: The Short Message mainly exploiting outstanding issues of current society such as school violence, student age depression, suicide, and … the COVID-19 pandemic.
The problem lies in these places!
Games Silent Hill, or horror games in general, although there are elements of depression and suicide, they are intended to support the horror elements of the game, so that players have a feeling of panic, surprise, stimulating fear instinct.
As for Silent Hill: The Short Message, the writer feels that the horror elements of the game are just to… Educating players about the scariness of school violence and depression is rather.
Throughout Silent Hill: The Short Message, the game prompts the writer to… three times, ‘if you are suicidal, call the US call center XXX-XXXX for advice.’, and then include several segments to describe how the person being bullied, with ‘psychological ghosts’ around constantly cursing Words like ‘you f*k’, or ‘get off your mother’, ‘animal’, etc.
It may be okay to listen once, but the game constantly crams such things for 2 hours like fear that the player does not know what the character is thinking in his heart, does not know what the character has gone through.
Where are the secret messages, the vague questions that players freely understood in their own way in previous games? Where are James Sunderland’s inner elements of horror when he enters an abandoned hospital?
Not to mention that Anita’s temperament is somewhat inconsistent. The writer couldn’t help but laugh when she was just ‘chased’ into smoke, always screaming to stop, let me get out of here, after escaping for real, the first thing is… opened her phone to chat with Amelie, not even bothering to mention that she was trapped in an abandoned building with a terrorist monster.
There is a scene when Anita walks along a corridor, suddenly the corridor turns into a wall full of hideous human handprints. If you’re the one writing in this case, it’s just running fast, and yet our Anita is calm… Opening the phone texts very casually like nothing happened?!
In a nutshell, the plot of Silent Hill: The Short Message Start as a clone of Silent Hill 2, but halfway through the game forgetting it’s a horror game, instead focusing on educating players about the harmful effects of social media on students’ mental health and mental health, and finally rushing to hit a plot twist or two to assert itself as a horror game!
Honestly, if the games Silent Hill The future is arranged like Silent Hill: The Short Message, then longtime fans can… forget the series Silent Hill All right. Call it by another name, such as Life of Strange: Horror Version Okay?
The game forgets it’s a horror game, instead focuses on educating players about the harmful effects of social media on students’ mental health and mental health, and finally rushes to hit a plot twist or two to assert itself as a horror game!
Boring, repetitive gameplay
Arrange Silent Hill: The Short Message It is not wrong to enter the ‘interactive movie’ genre, when throughout the game what players need to do is… walk around the apartment complex, and press X to check what needs to be checked, read what needs to be read (if you can’t find something to read, the game will… lock the door until you find out).
There is only one puzzle in the entire game, and it is not difficult at all. Integrated into these segments are live-action footage, helping players to see little Maya ‘in the flesh, in the flesh’.
Quite funny, perhaps because the actor who plays Maya is Japanese, the voice of these films is completely voiced, creating a ‘bad crying, bad laughing’ scene. Ignoring this issue, these movies are actually quite interesting, relatively elaborately shot, bringing a new layer of emotions to players.
If that’s the case, then the writer has no problem, but between these ‘discovery’ stages are chase sequences, where the player has to run away from a cherry blossom monster stuck close behind him, and when you get caught you will have to… run from the beginning.

This type of segment felt his heart beating for the first time, but Konami didn’t know if it was because of laziness, or secret ideas, but for the segment to repeat to… 4 times. The first time it was a little scary, the second time it was boring, and the third and fourth times, the writer just found it boring and annoying, just like Dead by Daylight Total. Even the writer plays with the nextbot party Garry’s mod I like it even more.
Already tedious, these segments lose the element of surprise, as each time the chase segment is about to start, Anita’s phone becomes noisy, the screen becomes timid, and the writer’s head rings ‘Ah shit, here we go again.’
In the last segment, the player will have to fumble in a large maze, looking for photos ‘as small as mosquito eyes’ scattered throughout the maze, and if the monster catches it, it will have to … Replay from the beginning of the segment! This only ‘blows away’ what is called fear and horror, leaving only the exasperation and discomfort of playing the game.
At the very least, I feel that the design of the cherry blossom monster, created by Pyramid Head character designer Masahiro Ito, is very impressive!

Nice picture, good sound
On pluses, Silent Hill: The Short Message has a relatively nice graphic background, and has portrayed quite well the atmosphere of the city of Kettenstadt: hazy, dark, covered with mist.
In addition, the writer is also quite impressed with the scenes depicting the confused interior of the characters, with distorted walls, dense with memo paper. In particular, the walls in the chase segments are elaborated in relative detail: rusty iron frames, or countless walls full of eyes and ears blinking continuously, etc.
Audio of Silent Hill: The Short Message is also a plus, with the background music adorning Anita’s every move. Unfortunately, in the exploration segments, there are no unexpected events, making these pieces of music almost lose their meaning and only ‘listen for fun’.
